Final Year Medical Student GP Rotation October 2015
We are proud to be involved with the training and education of medical students and we are actively involved with training final year medical students from UCC.
We have 4 students from UCC working on a 4 week rotation in our General Practice.
This works as a two way learning experience, as it provides the students with a valuable and practical insight into Primary care, while our doctors , through involvement with the students in tutorials and clinical audits, maintain and enhance their own knowledge.
Each GP has a student sitting in with them for consultations, but patients are always given the opportunity to request a consultation with the doctor alone if they would prefer. However we do ask people to remember that the quality of the patient service provided by the health service going forward can only be maintained and improved by training, teaching, audits and research, all of which we facilitate by allowing students to participate in all aspects of general practice including consultations.
We would like to reassure you that all members of staff including our students are governed by an ethic of privacy and confidentiality.
Activities of the GP Attachment
Students participate in a range of activities during their general practice attachment with us.
The activities they undertake during the attachment include the following:-
- Observation of consultations between GPs and their patients.
- Observation of consultations between other healthcare and primary care staff and patients.
- Consultations with patients and/ or their carers under the supervision of a GP (often referred to as parallel consulting i.e. consulting their own patients in parallel with the GP).
- Carrying out clinical procedures under supervision.
- Tutorials.
- Feedback/ report back sessions.
- Audit/ quality review project.
- Directed self-learning.
- Self-directed learning.
Learning to be a good doctor means spending time with patients and the health care professionals who work with them. We aim to provide our final year students with the opportunity to do this in a general practice setting, and we would like to thank all our patients who have assisted us with this.
Travel Vaccines
For all those planning their holidays and travelling abroad, now is the time to consider attending your GP to find out what Vaccines you may require. We have access to a regularly updated Website run by the "Travel Medicine Society of Ireland", so we know exactly what vaccines are required, any where in the world, at any given time. You can check out the Vaccines we have available on our Travel Vaccinations page Go to Travel Vaccination Page
